Care Requirements

1. Tank Size: Oscars are large fish, growing up to 12-14 inches in length. A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for a single Oscar. For multiple fish, a 75-100 gallon tank is preferable.
   • Example: If you plan to keep two Oscars, a 75-gallon tank would give them enough room to swim and grow.
2. Water Parameters:
   • Temperature: Oscars prefer water temperatures between 75°F and 80°F (24°C - 27°C).
   • pH: Keep the pH level between 6.0 and 8.0, with a slightly acidic to neutral environment being ideal.
   • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is best.
   • Filtration: Oscars produce a significant amount of waste, so a high-quality filtration system is crucial. Use a powerful filter that maintains clean water and minimizes ammonia spikes.
3. Tank Setup:
   • Substrate: Fine gravel or sand works best, as Oscars tend to dig and rearrange their surroundings.
   • Decor: They can be aggressive with decorations, often knocking over or moving them. Secure any décor firmly or avoid fragile items. Smooth rocks and driftwood are good choices for the tank.
   • Lighting: Oscars do not require intense lighting; moderate aquarium lighting works best.
   • Hiding Spots: Though large, Oscars appreciate caves or hiding spots. Ensure there is enough room for them to retreat comfortably.

Feeding Instructions

Oscar fish are omnivores with a diet that should consist of both plant and animal matter. Their feeding needs are as follows:

1. Staple Diet:
   • Feed them high-quality commercial pellets formulated for cichlids. These pellets provide the essential nutrients they need.
2. Protein Sources:
   • You can occasionally offer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, mealworms, or crickets. However, avoid feeder fish as they may carry diseases or parasites.
   • Example: Feed them small chunks of shrimp or earthworms as treats to meet their protein requirements.
3. Vegetable Matter:
   • Add some plant-based food such as spinach, peas (without skins), or cucumber slices.
4. Feeding Frequency:
   • Feed adult Oscars once a day and young Oscars two to three times daily.
   • Be careful not to overfeed as Oscars are prone to obesity. Feed only what they can consume within 2-3 minutes.

Ease of Keeping

1. Aggressiveness: Oscars can be territorial, especially during breeding. They may not always get along with other species, so choose tank mates wisely.
   • Tip: Keep Oscars with other large, robust fish like Jack Dempseys or Plecos. Avoid smaller fish as they might get eaten.
2. Water Changes: Since Oscars are messy eaters and produce a lot of waste, frequent water changes are essential. Change 25-30% of the tank water weekly to maintain optimal conditions.
3. Behavior: They are highly intelligent and can recognize their owners. They often interact by begging for food or following your movements outside the tank. This makes them fun, but also means they require consistent attention.
